Despite being a 1/72 scale model, the Sky Defender’s massive backpack and intricate design make it comparable to a 1/60 scale model – it’s truly immense, making your display cabinet feel the pressure. The model features a three-layer nested frame design and an expandable outer armor structure, boasting a whopping 1108 parts!

The main body of the Sky Defender stands approximately 27CM in height, with an overall full height of about 34CM, and a wingspan width of roughly 50CM when fully extended. It’s not just the size that’s massive; the weight of the Sky Defender is substantial too. The skeleton part alone weighs approximately 484 grams, while the entire body reaches about 717 grams. When equipped with the base, the total weight shoots up to approximately 1113 grams.

Beyond its size and weight, the assembly process and playability of the Sky Defender are extremely close to that of the PG Unleashed models, making it a 3rd party-grade PG Unleashed standard product! The parts are sectioned, allowing you to break off and discard after assembly, which reduces the time spent searching for pieces (very PG Unleashed-like). It includes adhesive etching parts to enhance detail (a PG Unleashed configuration), and upon completion, it features a full-body explosive armor expansion mechanism (in line with PG Unleashed).

The product’s packaging box is roughly the size of two PG Unleashed boxes, and its weight surpasses some die-cast finished products.

The action base does not only serve as a support stand, but it is also a mechanical preparation deck brimming with intricate details. The bottom of the base is designed to store interchangeable hand types and beam saber effects. It includes a set of deck replacement parts, which can be used to fill the voids left after the support arms are removed.

Closed fist hands x2, open palm hands x2, gun-holding hands x2, sword-holding hands x2, general grip hands x2. This set of hand parts offers a variety of poses and weapon grips for the model, enhancing its display and playability.

The pre-painted panels offer an enhanced visual appeal to the model kit:
Pre-Painted Panels: The metallic blue-gray pieces have been upgraded to pre-painted panels, with a total of 8 pieces sprayed.
Gold and silver colors utilize a bright metallic finish, while the metallic blue-gray features a matte metallic effect.
This detail highlights the care and quality put into the production of the kit, ensuring collectors and builders receive a model with a high-end finish and reduced need for additional painting.

The photo-etched parts are designed for convenience and ease of use:

Photo-Etched Panels with Adhesive Backing: These panels are made to closely replicate the ease of use associated with non-drying adhesive stickers, significantly reducing the difficulty traditionally associated with photo-etched parts. The absence of connecting tabs eliminates the need for trimming, and the adhesive backing allows for a more convenient and faster application process.

This addition is a thoughtful consideration for modelers, streamlining the building process and enhancing the overall user experience with the kit.

The water slide decals are thoughtfully categorized for user preference:

Key Water Decals and Auxiliary Decals: The water slide decals are distinctly marked with red numbers for key decals and black numbers for auxiliary decals. This allows modelers to choose their decal scheme based on personal preference and the amount of work they wish to undertake.

This system provides flexibility and customization, catering to both the enthusiast who wishes to fully detail their model and those who prefer a more straightforward approach.

The assembly of the product is designed to be completed in distinct phases, enhancing the building experience:

Step 1: Complete Backpack Skeleton
This phase involves assembling the entire structural framework of the backpack component and synchronizing the installation of the base module with the backpack assembly. This step facilitates the display of the overall internal structure of the backpack.

Step 2: Core Structure and Mechanical Details of the Main Body
The core structural layer provides robust joint support. Through numerous mechanical detail parts, a highly realistic mechanical inner structure is mixed and built, offering a true sense of realism.

Step 3: Metallic Frame Reinforcement
In this phase, a substantial amount of metallic-colored frame parts are added to the internal structure, simulating a realistic mechanical frame protection structure and adding depth to the internal construction.

Step 4: External Armor Coverage
This final step covers the entire mech with external armor for protection, completing the assembly of the whole model!

This structured approach not only eases the building process but also allows builders to appreciate the complexity and beauty of the model’s design, from its inner workings to its armored exterior.

Understanding the Tightness in Assembly of Your Model

When assembling your model, you’ll encounter different levels of tightness across various components, designed to ensure both durability and flexibility. Here’s a breakdown:

Normal Tightness: Approximately 80% of the model, mainly encompassing the external armor, decorative details, and non-load-bearing parts, is designed with a standard level of tightness. This ensures that pieces fit snugly without requiring excessive force, maintaining the aesthetic integrity of the model.
Tighter Fit: Around 18% of the assembly, found in areas that require a degree of movement, explosive armor effects, and certain load-bearing capabilities, will have a tighter fit. This ensures that parts remain secure during pose adjustments and display.
Very Tight Fit: A critical 2% of the model, crucial for maintaining the overall stability and structural integrity, features a very tight fit. These key load-bearing points utilize POM (Polyoxymethylene) parts for their high strength and durability, ensuring the model can be displayed confidently.

This detailed approach to assembly tightness guarantees that your model not only looks impressive but is also robust and capable of holding dynamic poses.

To prevent loose joints, high-strength POM materials are used in combination with ABS, determined through repeated testing for the optimal mix to ensure joint strength. There’s even a special edition with metal joints for the fans to choose from. The model also boasts rich joint interactivity, hydraulic rod details, and more.

Navigating the Assembly of POM Parts: A Delicate Balance Between Durability and Flexibility

In the realm of model assembly, the choice of materials plays a pivotal role in the final product’s durability, flexibility, and overall feel. The Sky Defender kit incorporates POM parts, known for their superior wear resistance and mechanical strength compared to ABS and PS materials. However, POM’s unique characteristics also introduce specific considerations during assembly.

The Double-Edged Sword of POM Material

POM material has a shrinkage rate of 0.18%, slightly higher than the 0.05% of ABS and PS materials. This difference underscores POM’s exceptional durability and the need for precise injection molding parameters to ensure accurate part dimensions. However, the environmental temperature can significantly impact POM, and the material’s tendency to produce noise during inter-part assembly is notable. Thus, POM represents a double-edged sword: opting for its tightness and durability may require sacrificing some smoothness in assembly and accepting the characteristic sounds of POM parts fitting together.

First-Time Assembly with POM

Assembling POM parts for the first time may require considerable force, and initial movements post-assembly might be accompanied by a distinctive clicking sound. This phenomenon results from the material properties of POM during inter-part assembly and does not affect the parts’ strength. After about 12 hours of rest, the sounds typically decrease, and the damping feel becomes more suitable.

Guidance for Tight Assemblies

For areas requiring a very tight fit, the instruction manual provides timely tips to prepare modelers for the assembly experience. Detailed pictorial and video tutorials guide even those unfamiliar with POM through the process, ensuring a successful and satisfying build.

The Sky Defender model, with its vast size and weight, demands the exceptional characteristics of POM to stand proudly in any collection without showing signs of wear or fatigue. By following the provided guidelines and tutorials, builders can navigate the assembly of POM parts confidently, achieving a balance between the model’s impressive presence and enduring quality.
